Built in 1965, this facility is a venue for an unusual combination of events: professional athletics, entertainment and trade shows. It is home to major-league baseball, football (seating 53,000), basketball, and ice hockey teams (seating 15,000).
The circular indoor arena can be opened to link with an 80,000 square foot, below-grade exhibit hall, the roof of which forms a major plaza at the central parking level. The poured-in-place, pre-cast and post-tensioned concrete structures are together considered a regional landmark of the Bay Area. James Alcorn was senior designer under Charles Bassett, FAIA, at SOM in San Francisco.
